Underwater pool repair is exactly what it sounds like: repairing damage below the waterline while the pool remains full. Instead of draining tens of thousands of gallons, waiting for the pool to dry, performing the repair, and then refilling, our technicians work beneath the surface using materials and techniques designed to bond, seal, and cure in water.
This approach is not a shortcut or a temporary fix. Modern underwater repair materials, including structural epoxies, specialized caulking, and compression staples, are designed to perform permanently in a submerged environment. For many common pool problems, underwater repair produces the same long term result as a drained repair, with less disruption, less risk, and significantly less cost.
Signs You May Need an Underwater Repair
The following conditions suggest that damage exists below the waterline and may benefit from underwater repair.
Your pool is losing water beyond what evaporation explains. You notice a visible crack in the pool wall or floor below the waterline. A fitting, return jet, or skimmer connection appears loose, separated, or is leaking. You see staining, flaking, or deterioration on the pool surface below the water. Air bubbles are entering the return lines when the pump runs, suggesting a suction side leak. The pool water level consistently drops to a specific point and then stabilizes, which often indicates the leak is at that level. You have had the same area patched before and the repair has failed.
Any of these can indicate a problem that is reachable and repairable underwater without draining.
Leak Detection Comes First
Repairing a pool underwater only works if you’re repairing the right spot. Guessing where a leak is and patching a general area rarely solves the problem. The leak often continues, the homeowner pays for another repair, and the underlying issue goes unaddressed.

Our diagnostic process includes pressure testing individual plumbing lines to identify compromised pipes, dye testing at suspected leak points (cracks, fittings, seams, skimmer connections) to confirm exactly where water is escaping, and ultrasound listening to locate underground plumbing leaks that may be feeding the problem from the equipment side.

What Can Be Repaired Underwater
Crack Sealing and Structural Stabilization
Cracks in the pool shell that are leaking can be sealed underwater using epoxy injection. The epoxy fills the crack through its full depth and bonds to the surrounding concrete or gunite, restoring the watertight integrity of the shell at that point.
For structural cracks that are actively expanding, we install Torque Lock Structural Staples. These patented compression staples are drilled across the crack at regular intervals and torqued to specification, applying controlled compression that physically prevents the crack from widening further. This stabilization can be performed with the pool full, avoiding the need to drain in areas where hydrostatic pressure poses a risk.
Fitting, Return, and Skimmer Repairs
Leaking fittings are one of the most common underwater repair calls we handle. Return jets, skimmer connections, light niches, and main drain fittings can all develop leaks where they pass through the pool shell. Gaskets deteriorate, connections loosen from settlement, and sealant around penetrations breaks down over time.
We replace failed gaskets and fittings, reseal connections with pool grade caulking, and replace corroded or damaged components below the waterline. These repairs are performed by our technicians while diving the pool, and the pool remains in service throughout.
Surface and Liner Repairs
Damaged plaster, chipped areas, and localized surface deterioration can be patched underwater when the damage is limited to specific spots rather than widespread surface failure. For vinyl liner pools, tears, punctures, and bead track separations can be patched or sealed below the waterline using adhesives and materials designed to bond in water.
When surface damage is widespread rather than localized, underwater patching becomes impractical, and resurfacing or renovation is the more appropriate solution. We’ll tell you when that’s the case rather than applying patches that won’t hold up long term.
Pool Types We Repair Underwater

When Draining May Still Be Necessary
Not every pool problem can be solved underwater. Some repairs require access to areas that cannot be reached with the pool full, or involve materials that cannot be applied in water.
Draining may be necessary when the entire pool surface needs replastering or resurfacing, when structural damage requires access to the back side of the shell, when Torque Lock Staple installation requires work below the floor of the pool in certain configurations, or when renovation work involves the full interior of the pool.
In these cases, draining must be managed carefully in the Charleston Lowcountry. Elevated groundwater tables across much of Charleston, James Island, West Ashley, and many surrounding areas create hydrostatic pressure that can push a drained pool out of the ground. We evaluate water table conditions and manage the draining process to prevent structural damage.

If the pool shell has multiple structural cracks indicating active ground movement, if the surface has deteriorated across the entire interior, or if recurring repairs keep failing because the underlying structural issue has not been addressed, the pool may need structural repair with Torque Lock Staples and epoxy, or a full renovation that addresses the condition from the inside out.
